I served my Carpentry and Joinery apprenticeship in the North East of England between 1979 and 1983 and have worked in the industry throughout the UK ever since. I spent many years working in joinery workshops manufacturing bespoke furniture and have also spent many years working on building sites covering all aspects of carpentry and joinery and beyond.
During the last 15 years my wife and I have built 4 houses in the Highlands of Scotland. Having relocated to France we are currently embarking on our 5th and final home in the beautiful Ariège in the Pyrénées.
Our houses have all been entirely self-built and we have developed many new skills from foundations to finishings. In the process we have also built up a very good understanding of sustainable materials and ecological systems having installed Mechanical Heat Recovery and Ventilation units and enjoyed the benefits of the subsequent low energy environment.
Our houses were all built using the latest low energy principles achieving the highest air-tight ratings. They were heavily insulated buildings, far surpassing current regulations and attaining EPC rating ‘B’. The information I have accumulated over the years has been invaluable and I am happy to advise, guide and impart that knowledge to clients with similar interests. Ecological systems and sustainable products have become a passion and I still enjoy researching new technological advances.
In brief, I have over 40 years’ experience working within the trade from the South of England to the North West of Scotland learning and perfecting local working practices and traditions. I look forward to spending the rest of my career doing the same in the Ariège.
